Beam Systems

CAUTION: Revit seems to remember "Tag on Placement" toggle setting but NOT the "Tag Style" ("System" vs "Framing") setting (defaults to "System"). TODO: wish

TIP: Since there's no "Edit Type" button next to the Beam Type property [TODO: WISH], to create a new Framing Type (based on the existing Type) for a Beam System, select ONE of the beams, Edit Type, and create the new Type as desired. After finishing the change, undo the "Modify element attributes" (but not "Modify type attributes") - so that the beam used will not be disconnected from the Beam System's Beam Type property. Then select the Beam System and change the Beam Type property to the newly-created Type. That way, new members will have the correct type AND all existing members will change (if the Beam Type is changed for the System).

NOTE: "Elevation" offset parameter is only available if Work Plane is set to a Level (i.e. you can't offset from a Ref Plane or element surface). See IDEA:Displacement in the beam system. by pasha-sevkav

TODOs

  • Submit as Idea: Case ID: 13534725 (submitted 2017-10-27 5:20pm HST): BUG - Beam System won't allow you to choose Tag on Placement (Framing): When placing an Automatic Beam System, you can't select "Tag on Placement" unless there is a Beam System Tag loaded (required for Tag Style: System) even though you just want Tag Style: Framing (which only needs a Framing Tag loaded). After loading a system tag and changing style to Framing, the system tag can be purged without issue (or by using Undo, which does not undo the change to the Tag Style setting). See Screencast: http://autode.sk/2zKHVfO Response 2017-11-08: "...Revit is working as designed, albeit the behavior is not consistent which could use improvement. Since the tag on placement feature is under the beam system tab, it makes sense that this tag would need to be loaded, even if you are using the framing option. I would suggest logging an improvement to the Revit Ideas page..." Feedback 2017-11-09[1]

Notes

  1. While I would have liked to avoid having to deal with Revit Ideas, I understand why the "as designed" reason comes up so much (I probably won't ever bother submitting an idea for this one, as I've already spent more time on it than it would take to fix, and while it would make Revit a more polished program, it's not an issue that I normally would have to deal with). However, several times now the support tech has missed my Screencast link (even though I specifically refer to it, in addition to providing the address), and I'm beginning to wonder if it's not a deficiency in the techs but possibly a formatting issue (how they are shown the request - link not "clickable"?) and/or related to how the issue gets passed back to Autodesk from Directly? I know when replying (using the web page) my line breaks get lost. And when the tech emails w/ links, the links don't show on the web site. Maybe all that can be looked into?
