TODOs
- check sub-base thickness of typical SOG detail: DRAW EVERYTHING TO SCALE (even "NTS" details) - 5270 HPHA: typ sog details had 4", 4 1/4", 4 1/2" basecourse, so when I copied an added 3' structurall fill, there were weird gaps & double lines...
- make full-size PDFs instead (for engineers to copy-paste for project-specific layout)
- add ##-# to detail titles in CAD (like Revit has)
- make compilation/sample PDFs (by copy-pasting PDFs); add NPLT note in details used (to update sample PDF when detail is changed)
- replace Text & Detail Lines w/ [KAI]\Annotations\Subview Title (GA).rfa
- convert all floating text to subscripts (ld lap splices in conc framing, etc.) [make add-in to help]
- add NPLT text to legends (in box - so can see source in markups that don't clip their titles)
IN-PROG: add template versions
- use Ref. Plane box (duplicate a view with detailing and modify as necessary)
- use a different number if it's an alternate... (03-1-H/9>4)
- put markups (that haven't been done yet) in the shortcuts folder ("Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE (PDFs and Instructions)\REVIT PDFs\”) and prefix with the category number so it will sort next to the relevant shortcut
Use caution when editing Typical Details - check that you're editing the latest version, or copy your changes up through the latest
- IMPORTANT: If you see a 4-digit number at the end of the file name (such as "03-2 Concrete Framing.0056.rvt"), it's NOT the latest version.
- see also applicable portion of recording for KAI Monthly Training#2020-02-27 .28Th.29 12:30-1:30.
- NOTE: Inserting a detail with Section Cuts will bring in those details also (for example, 03-2-L-06 brings in 9 & 11 also [TODO: add note to detail]), however, View References will just break/disappear if the target is not brought in at the same time (or already exist? example: placeholder references in Legends are set to the "East" Elevation, which has a consistent Element ID in the project templates [TODO: works when copying; verify if this works when inserting also]).
- be careful when making PDFs to save them in the correct location (found Revit PDF in the 05-2 CAD folder)

Shortcuts to the PDFs
Shortcuts to the PDFs are stored in these two folders:
(PDFs and Instructions)\CAD PDFs Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE (PDFs and Instructions)\CAD PDFs\
Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE (PDFs and Instructions)\REVIT PDFs
[file://dellserver3\cad\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE%20(PDFs%20and%20Instructions)\CAD%20PDFs Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE (PDFs and Instructions)\CAD PDFs\]
[file://Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE%20(PDFs%20and%20Instructions)\REVIT%20PDFs Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE (PDFs and Instructions)\REVIT PDFs]
Bookmark the two folders above. Do NOT bookmark the individual PDFs, especially the Revit ones, as names and locations WILL change over time.
Each PDF should have thumbnail page(s) at the beginning showing 16 lettered pages each.
Instructions for printing CAD PDFs:
Just use Publish (with the plotstamp settings given in model space) - the index sheets are paperspace tabs.
Instructions for printing Revit PDFs:
NOTE: We are printing FULL SIZE 22x34 sheets for the PDFs now (instead of the previous halfsize for 11x17) so that engineers can copy-paste into a border from the project for laying out the sheets.
- In the "Print" dialog, with the appropriate PDF writer chosen for "Printer", click "Properties..."
- on the "Layout" tab, change "Pages per Sheet" to 16
- print all
- if needed, create a "View/Sheet Set" called "Sheets A thru P (all 16)", or "Sheets A thru H (all 8)", or as appropriate
- do NOT hide NPLT notes
- (add "tn" to the name when saving the PDF)
- repeat steps 1 & 2, but change "Pages per Sheet" back to 1 and save to the regular name
- use Revu, etc. to insert the "tn" file at the beginning
- delete the (temporary) "tn" file
- if PDF is made from a new version, update the shortcut in:
Q:\Kai_Detail_Library\_GUIDE (PDFs and Instructions)\REVIT PDFs\
See KAI Monthly Training#2020-12-15 (Tu) 12:37-1:28 recording for a partial demo [0:33:10-0:34:05] [TODO: do separate recording showing the full process]
Instructions for upgrading to new Revit version:
This assumes that the file was previously cleaned up (no stray views / everything on the lettered sheets).
- check the archive (S:) for the old version, and rename the file (in Q:) accordingly and make it "Read-only"
- example: If the latest version in the archive is
S:\CAD\KAI RVT2017\TYPICAL DETAILS\03-4 Concrete Tilt-Up Wall Panel.0001.rvt
, then renameQ:\KAI RVT2017\TYPICAL DETAILS\03-4 Concrete Tilt-Up Wall Panel.rvt
to03-4 Concrete Tilt-Up Wall Panel.0002.rvt
- example: If the latest version in the archive is
- open the typical file in the new version (Audit while upgrading) and save in the new folder with a
TEMP
suffix - re-load any families noted in the table above
- (Insert > [Load from Library] > Load Family)
- NOTE: can select multiple families in the same folder
- save the temp file
- start a new project (with the latest KAI template for that version)
- save in the new folder with the appropriate name (increase backups to 20)
- (example:
Q:\KAI RVT2018\TYPICAL DETAILS\03-4 Concrete Tilt-Up Wall Panel.rvt
)
- (example:
- save in the new folder with the appropriate name (increase backups to 20)
- Insert > [Import] > Insert from File > Insert Views from File
- select the "TEMP" (upgraded) file
- check all the typical sheets (##-#-X, not the QC sheets, if any)
- WARNING: trying to include "in progress" views (with cad linked in and/or partially converted) will result in this Warning:
Linked Imported Files cannot be copied across projects. All non-RVT linked files will be pasted as imports instead.
- the "Duplicate Types" dialog is ok ("The following Types already exist but are different. The Types from the project into which you are pasting will be used.")
- if you get any Warnings such as 'Family "..." has been renamed to "...1" to avoid conflicts...'
- add the family to the table above, but IGNORE the following (will just be purged after final insertion):
- undo the insert
- repeat step 3 in the TEMP file (re-load the newly-noted families)
- repeat step 5 in the new project (there should be no warnings when inserting the views)
- copy info from old start view into new start view
- number & category (where job number & title usually go)
- "families to reload after upgrading" (match table above, if any changes)
- change history
- Purge Unused the duplicate families - the ignored families above (Callout Head..., Section Head..., View Title...) with "1" suffix
- (optional, but recommended) clean up the new project:
- delete all Legends
- delete all Schedules (except for View List?)
- delete all "X-QC-..." Sheets
- delete all Plans and 3D Views (keep Elevations, especially "East")
- delete both "GENERAL NOTES..." Drafting Views
- delete "x48 Samples to Copy" Drafting View
- collapse "Instructions"
- collapse Families
- expand ??? > ??? (where all the typical details should be)
- DON'T purge (so that all types are there, if needed, when creating new details or editing)
- (VERY optional) change Browser Organization for Sheets to be 4 leading characters (instead of 2) so will show entire number (##-#)
