Plan Regions

From Real World Revit

Plan Regions are a way of changing the View Range for a specific area of a Plan View.

CAUTION: Creating a Plan Region that encompasses the entire view (with different View Range settings) will NOT have the same result as changing the View Range settings for the view - notably Section Cut visibility.

See View Range

Don't use Plan Regions for any major View Range changes (make separate plans instead).

For some elements (Framing), the ENTIRE element is visible as long as part of the element is within the "effective View Range" (the View Range of the main view along with any Plan Regions).

Category What's Shown Notes
Structural Framing entire element includes the connection points (to the center of Walls, etc.) - type doesn't seem to matter (steel, concrete, etc.)
Walls changes at Plan Region boundaries

Plan Regions can sometimes affect an entire object just by touching/crossing it (such as Framing (Beams)), while others need to have the entire bounding box (not just geometry) within the boundary to affect the cut (see Stairs#Plan Regions) or visibility/beyond (see Floors#Plan Regions). Specialty Equipment seems to be affected by just touching the bounding box (3840.02 Kinnick bleachers) - see Screencast: Plan Region seems to catch Specialty Equipment by bounding box - Even though a Plan Region doesn't touch the geometry of the Specialty Equipment, it gets "caught" by the PR.

Ideas

TODOs

  • be able to set View Range properties to "per Parent View"/"No Override" - Example: #3840.02 Kinnick 2/1/18: had several plan regions on 1st floor to show high windows (overridden "Cut plane" & "Top"). Then changed main view's "Bottom" and "View Depth" to show pile caps (previously was only showing on a separate plan). However, areas w/ Plan Regions were not showing the same because their View Range settings needed to be updated separately.
  • and/or be able to associate View Range properties to Global Parameters - Example (same job): have overall plans, enlarged plans, etc. but want to make sure view range settings (or at least the cut plane) are same (still need to manually update Plan Regions, but doesn't usually matter enough to make them on Overall Plans). Would be nice to Schedule the settings.
  • be able to Schedule Plan Region and View Range values (for QC) - or make an add-in (& to keep PRs coordinated between different views - for example: overall & partial plans - see #3840.02 Kinnick)
