TIP (2018+): Naming Reference Planes in a Family will result in those names being visible when Tabbing through them in the Project (see Revit 2018 Reference Planes). TODO: This should also be in Creating Families guide.
Hosting
Apparently there is a "direction" (but no flip control) dependent on the direction that the Ref. Plane is drawn, per James Boone 10/15/2020.
Hosting Lights, etc. to Ref.Planes (instead of Walls or Ceilings/Floors) gives more flexibility and stability (avoids losing host when elements are deleted):
We also host lights on a named Refence plane particular in early design and collaboration with consultants
Ceiling design can change all the time and in the past we would loose Ceiling host families
We don't use them anymore only Face based Families even then they loose their host and at times get hidden by new Ceiling Geometry
Leaving them on a named reference plane till design is concluded avoids all this.

We host all of our content on named reference planes, we do not own the content in anybody else's models, such as structural backing walls so our wall panels, windows, trims, flashings and roof coverings need to be built on known references defined by geometry which we do not own and can change or be deleted. When doing large portal frame warehouses, we typically get a steel ifc model, which is under continuous development but is good enough to establish the sheeting lines for the cladding. To establish these cladding planes, we create reference planes 3mm outside of the sheeting rails and purlins, which allows for support galv's and flashings. Our cladding and roof panels are hosted on these reference planes.

I would say that if you ever had a project that changed from one ceiling type to another or a grid that got moved because of the whims of an architect, you would change your tune quickly [about hosting on elements]. Besides, if you are smart about putting reference plains, you can move a lot of fixtures based on that plain at one time, giving me the control and not someone else. Be smarter in placing and naming.
