NOTE: You can't tag Topography (or Pads?). You need to use a Material Tag instead (see Live Detail Annotation#Project Setup, Materials, and Topography).

Be cautious when copying Tags between views (including Multi-Category Tags) - they will sometimes host to different/unexpected elements. FIX: use Select Host and Pick New Host as needed.

Some tags can work with multiple categories, such as Floor tags for Structural Foundation Slabs (but then can't change span direction type?) or Generic Model Element for some other categories (especially newly added in R2022)? [TODO: check]

“Rotate with component” doesn't work for all categories

per Heather Lech (8/28/2019):

it always worked for the following list of tag categories:

  • Walls
  • Curtain Walls
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Railings
  • Ramps
  • Stairs (Runs, Landings and Supports)
  • Structural (Framing, Braces and Trusses)
  • Property Boundary
  • Property Line Segments
  • Planting
  • Parking
  • Path of Travel
  • MEP elements (ducts, pipes, flex ducts, cable trays) - These have RWC checked on by default.

NOTE: If you add a leader to a tag which is rotated with its host component and then you add an elbow to the leader, the tag will no longer rotate with component - it will orient itself to the view instead. Remove the leader to return the tag to the rotated orientation (Rotate with component).

but it does not work for:

  • Foundations (Isolated)
  • Furniture
  • Furniture Systems
  • Casework
  • Generic Models (except for Model Text)
  • Lighting Fixture
  • Structural Columns
  • Massing
  • Curtain Panels
  • Specialty Equipment
  • MEP Equipment (e.g. VAV units, plumbing fixtures)

TODO: should uncheck when upgrading these families

nor does it work for:

  • Foundations (Wall and Slab)
  • Floors
  • Ceilings
  • Roofs
  • Detail Components
  • Mass Floors
  • Assemblies
  • Parts
  • MEP Air Terminals (e.g. Supply Diffuser)
  • Detail Item tags.

R2022+

per kimberly.fuhrman in Free rotation of tag on 4/23/21:

The default for the out-of-the-box structural framing tag is set to "rotate with component" in the family editor.  Uncheck that option, reload into the project, which will then allow you to switch to "Model" under Rotation. Switching to Model should also work for the structural foundation tag.

Troubleshooting

"Orientation" says "Horizontal" and is disabled, but tag is vertical (aligned to framing element)

If an elbow is added to the leader, the tag will become horizontal. Otherwise, it aligns with the framing member (see #4074.11 ADR 1S-106 framing tags at steel awning 9/3/2020).

Bugs

  • Case Number: 16159856 submitted 2020-01-14 12:53pm (CST): BUG: "Material Tag" doesn't show up in "Loaded Tags And Symbols" dialog - When placing a Material Tag (Annotate > [Tag] >), the "Tags..." button is in the Options Bar, but opening that dialog doesn't show an entry for "Material Tags". It should either be added (my assumption) or the button removed from the bar for that command (to avoid confusion).
    • Also, the "Tags..." button doesn't show up while placing Room Tags and Space Tags, but "Rooms" and "Spaces" ARE listed in the dialog (so they SHOULD have the button)
    • There's a disclaimer in the dialog stating that Multi-Category Tags aren't listed (why not?)
    • 2020-01-27 support (emphasis mine): "They [the developers] were apparently aware about a similar Annotation issue and this fell under that same Improvement umbrella. This is marked as an Improvement for the next release; not a defect. They do recognize the confusion it adds and the Improvement is currently still being worked on. No article is currently needed and if fixed by next release/build, it will be noted in the Release Notes."
      • my response on 2020-01-30 [at least they no longer say "Revit is working as designed"]:
        • Of course, it’s an area that needs “improvement”, not a “defect”, similar to how it’s not a “bug” unless Revit crashes – this is Autodesk, after all. LOL If Revit deleted every file in the current folder every time you clicked the save button – it wouldn’t be a “bug”, just an area that needed “improvement”. ;) Microsoft had a similar policy years ago – they’re not “bugs”, they’re “features”.
      • which garnered the response: "You know Autodesk lingo all to well."
    • TODO: find article created 2020-01-31 (maybe by looking here)
