  • walls will show up even if outside of view range if top constraint is w/in (even if offset puts it out) [maybe; TODO: check]: 3962 Lanikai (R2016) pre-3/27/18 S115, along grid J at 07 (ID: 845426), but then thought I moved it out & it was (partially) still visible later...

NOTE: Quantities of layers are approximated/interpolated? see Mirko Jurčević's 2020-09-29 post #17 of Wall Layers survey

IMPORTANT: While there are different ways to model or show finishes (separate walls vs numerous types vs annotation), there is general consensus that finishes with thickness SHOULD be modeled to avoid coordination issues. Example: Aaron: 13" discrepancy (short) in a bathroom because finishes weren't modeled (9? shower stalls; plumbing was already installed in slab, but needed a redesign) [~1:44:00] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7KacK5jMjM

CAUTION (BUG): When Splitting Walls with Wall Footings

Wall Footing segment (when wall is split) changes Phase [to current view's] (see Screencast: https://autode.sk/2kz0BwT).

Both footing segments should maintain their original phase, just like the wall segments do.

Attach Top/Base

It seems that while the entire Wall does NOT need to be under the Floor to attach to it, there are some restrictions - maybe you can't have a Floor that's narrower than the Wall at any point? (see 2017-05-12 #3840.02 Wall ID 2250932 to Floor ID 2245466 - had to pull back from Grid M-5 to be able to attach.

NOTE: There are also issues with attaching to stairs (see Ideas below).

Wall Joins tool

Autodesk Revit 2016 _ (Element IDs)This join has more than 50 possible configurations. With so many alternatives to step through, it is probably more efficient to move walls by their end controls, in and out of the join in order to obtain the desired configuration.

For the cleanest joins, it's best to have all walls with the same top and bottom, and especially avoid overlap (such as one two-story wall joining with a single-story wall at each floor). Sometimes Revit gets confused about which wall should take precedence, which can result in an empty space at the join at some levels (see an old P807 corner [TODO]).

You can use the Wall Joins tool, or manually move the wall ends in and out until you get the desired join configuration.

Cut Wall end at an angle

See the screencast: cut wall ending at an angle

  1. Structure > [Model] > Component > Model In-Place
    1. Family Category: Walls
    2. enter a name (doesn't really matter)
    3. Create > [Forms] > Void Forms > Void Extrusion
      1. in plan, sketch the area of the Wall to be removed (closed loop)
      2. Finish Edit Mode
    4. in 3D or section/elevation, adjust top & bottom as appropriate (top & bottom of wall, door opening, etc.)
      • WARNING: Even if you constrain to the top/bottom of a door, the walls might not update properly at a join. TO FIX: Edit & Finish the in-place void after updating the door, etc.
    5. Modify > [Geometry] > Cut
      1. select the Wall
      2. select the Void
    6. Finish Model

Precast Wall Joints

Use full-height Doors/Windows

You can dimension to the centerlines in plan to easily designate joint locations. The opening "X" will not be noticeable in most views.

Use parts

Wrapping at Inserts/Ends

See bill's 8/28/2020 post for a good illustration of the 4 combinations (of "Both" and "None").

"Thinking Outside the Box"? - making odd walls, etc.

was from a Revit Kid webinar? 9?/2020:

NEVER delete the Mass - the ONLY way to modify the faces (walls, etc.) is to modify the mass

- click "Update to Face" after a change to the mass

- you can't pick a new host if the mass gets deleted, or bringing in a mass from a previous model

some not needed because of new sloping wall tool

Window and Door openings in multiple Walls (stacked vertically, parallel, or end-to-end)

Join the Walls (using Modify > [Geometry] > Join > [Join Geometry]) so that you only need ONE Window or Door to cut through both Walls.

For example, if the concrete stem wall below a cmu wall, and it's supposed to go above the slab (to form a curb), join the two walls so that doors will cut through BOTH walls (without having to duplicate doors, or manually Edit Profile). See #4030.10 Waipahu HS Phase 2 (KAI Monthly Training#2023-01-10 (Tu) ~12:35-1:38).

NOTE: You could (instead) create a Stacked Wall type to handle conditions where the multiple walls are stacked vertically (such as a concrete stem wall below a CMU wall, or concrete curb below a stud wall). In that case, to handle conditions where the foundation steps, you can Edit Profile (instead of making multiple segments of different wall types) to keep the transition at a constant elevation.

Parts

Olivier Pesch 2020-10-06:

Hi Peter, just a little comment on the explosion of types. That's where parts are helping, you can stick to generic wall types and then decide to change and subdivide every single part to several material of different thicknesses. It even work on linked model where the host model will only contain the part, not the original.

TODOs

  • WISH: attach wall with offset (vert/plumb or paralel opts); ex: #3931 4/18/18: cmu wall should be down for Cx outriggers on ends
  • WISH: "Detach Last" or "Detach Selected" options (not just "Detach All") for Walls [maybe can make add-in] - 5/27/19 Olivier Pesch wrote: Hi Minjie, regarding the attach wall functionality. One thing that puzzles me since decades is the fact that we can attach a wall to several floors and of course will gets different results related to the order of selection. But when we push "detach" button we only get the choice of "detach all" and not "detach last" nor "detach selected" for example! I think that that makes this functionality another half-baked one. https://feedback.autodesk.com/r/?965cd6613cc14bd2a0931acc1e5dca86

Ideas

TODO: Surface Patterns in elevation (such as CMU brick hatch) don't respect Phases - i.e. show up as black regardless of phase but should be gray if existing.[2]

Notes

  1. d-denton proposed using Parts to make joints (seems too cumbersome): create Ref. Planes at joints (so they can be controlled later by Dimensions), select Wall and click Create Parts, then Divide Parts, then draw rectangle(s) that intersect the Wall where you want joints (you can't just draw lines there) and align-lock the appropriate lines to the Ref. Planes, Finish both, Dimension to Wall Joint (NOT Ref. Planes) if you want the dimension to print, Dimension to Ref. Planes if you want to move/specify their locations; to edit the joints without using Ref. Planes: select the Wall, click Edit Division then Edit Sketch [TODO: try (free) PCL PartsLab Add-In to "expedite the parts creation"]
